If you have customized your PC's appearance, you may want to save it as a theme to use it later or share with a friend. Here is how it can be done in Windows 10 Creators Update.

Windows 10 Creators Update, known as version 1704, is a feature update to Windows 10 which brings a lots of the user interface changes to the operating system. It adds the ability to install themes from the Store and many other new appearance options. For example, it keeps four recent accent colors you used in your account and allows you to define a custom color for windows, the taskbar and the Start menu. These changes are welcomed mostly by touch screen users, because the Settings app is more useful on such devices than the classic Personalization options of the Control panel. Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1704) is expected to be released in April 2017.

Windows has had support for themes, also known as “visual styles”, since Windows XP. By default, Windows only loads Microsoft-signed themes—but you can get around this limitation.
These aren’t your standard Windows themes. They modify the appearance of window title bars, buttons, and other visual elements.
Windows 10: Install WindowBlinds
You can still do this the old-fashioned way on Windows 7 (see our instructions in the next section for that), but it’s not so easy to do on Windows 10. UxStyle, the tool we recommend for Windows 7, no longer functions on modern versions of Windows 10. While you can directly modify the uxtheme.dll file, this change will be reverted whenever Windows 10 updates itself. And, because this is so hard to do, most user-created themes likely won’t be properly supported on the latest builds of Windows 10.
But there’s still a solution. If you want to theme your Windows 10 desktop, we recommend you install Stardock’s WindowBlinds software. It’s still fully supported on Windows 10, and doesn’t require hacking with system files. It does cost $10, but that $10 will save you a lot of trouble. A free 30-day trial is also available.
WindowBlinds also includes some polished custom Windows themes. To choose a theme, just click it in the WindowBlinds window and then click “Apply style to desktop”. Your change will instantly take effect, although you may have to close and restart some applications, including Google Chrome, before your change takes effect.

WindowBlinds makes it easier to install custom themes, too. It uses its own WindowBlinds format for themes, and you can find more themes on WinCustomize.org.
For example, you can find a Dark Mode theme that, unlike Windows 10’s built-in Dark Mode, also applies to File Explorer and other apps.
Windows 7: Patch Your System Files With UxStyle
Windows checks if themes are signed by Microsoft before loading them. If they aren’t, Windows won’t load them at all. To use them, you’ll have to modify Windows system files—uxtheme.dll in particular—and disable the check. In the past, this required booting into Safe Mode and manually replacing system files. Today, there are easier ways to do this.
Oct 08, 2017 There are no respawning enemies, so finite XP. It's open world, but with a rather narrow fixed path through that open world based on the enemy levels. Divinity original sin for the pc.
UxStyle is the ideal free solution for Windows 7 users (although it no longer works on Windows 10). UxStyle runs entirely in memory, disabling the check without modifying any system files. It’s the easiest, safest way to enable third-party themes without WindowBlinds. (You can choose to pay for a copy of WindowBlinds on Windows 7, too, if you like.)
To use UxStyle, download it, extract the .zip file, and then run the x64 installer (if you’re using a 64-bit version of Windows) or the x86 one (if you’re using a 32-bit version of Windows). After installation, a new process named “UnsignedThemesSvc.exe” will run in the background. Reboot your computer and you’ll be able to install unsigned themes.
How to Find Visual Styles Online
You’ll find custom visual styles for Windows on a variety of websites. One of the best places to hunt for visual styles is DeviantArt. For example, check out the Windows 7 visual styles page on DeviantArt to find themes.
![3d themes for windows 10 3d themes for windows 10](/uploads/1/2/3/9/123934539/330833570.png)
Note that these files are generally unconfirmed ZIP or RAR files, which may contain malware or links to infected sites. Use a virus scanner for extra protection if you’re in any doubt. Also note that specific versions of Windows might require specific updates to theme files—double-check the information on DeviantArt or other pages to make sure the theme you’re downloading is compatible with your build.
Choose a theme you want and download it to your computer. To illustrate the process, we’ll use the Maverick for Win7 theme that attempts to port Ubuntu’s old default theme to Windows 7.
Many themes are distributed in .rar format. If you want to open these, you’ll need a file-extracting program like the free 7-Zip.

Themes are located in the following folder:
Each theme has its own subfolder here. To install a new theme, just drop its files into the Themes folder and agree to the UAC prompt. The .theme files should be in the root of the folder.
Note that some themes may include other assets, and will require you to follow additional instructions before they work as intended. For example, themes may include custom fonts and icons. The theme’s download page—or included README file—will generally contain information on completing the installation process.
If you do need to install fonts, just drop the included .ttf font files into the following folder:
When you have a theme installed, you can double-click its .theme file to switch to it. You’ll also find it listed alongside the themes included with Windows in your desktop personalization control panel.
Because Microsoft doesn’t officially support third-party themes, you’ll likely run into the occasional graphical glitch or rough edge when using custom visual styles with third-party applications. You can’t do much about this. Developers generally don’t take unofficial Windows themes into account when designing their applications.

Windows offers a setting named Dark Mode that applies a dark theme to apps you get from the Windows Store. It doesn’t affect most desktop apps, but we’ve got some other solutions for those. Here’s how to get your whole desktop (or as much as possible) looking dark.
Enable Dark Mode for Windows 10 Settings and Apps
To enable Dark Mode, head to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Scroll down and select the “Dark” option under the “Choose your app mode” section.
The Settings application itself immediately turns dark, as will many other “Universal Windows Platform” applications (those you get from the Windows Store). However, it’s up to each developer to support Dark Mode, and many do not. And, as we mentioned before, this option doesn’t affect most desktop applications. Those remain white. A few desktop applications, including File Explorer and Paint.NET, do respect this setting—but most don’t.
Enable Dark Mode in Microsoft Edge
The Microsoft Edge web browser included with Windows 10 also has a dark theme. However, its dark theme option is entirely separate from the Dark Mode option in Settings for some reason.
To activate the dark theme in Edge, click the menu button on the toolbar (the icon with three dots at the far right side), and then select the “Settings” option. In the “Choose A Theme” drop-down menu, choose the “Dark” option.
Note that the title bar, toolbars, and menus for Edge turn dark, but web pages themselves remain unaffected. You’ll need a browser extension like Turn Off the Lights to make the whole web dark.
You can also set your theme separately in the Groove music player, Movies & TV video player, and Photos apps. However, they’ll use your system theme setting by default. You don’t have to change the setting manually, as you do with Edge.

Enable the Dark Theme in Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office also contains a dark theme that isn’t enabled by default and must be manually enabled.
To choose the dark theme, open an Office application like Word or Excel and head to File > Options. On the “General” tab, look for the click the “Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office” section and set the “Office Theme” drop-down there to the “Black” option.
Your theme choice applies to all Office applications. So, if you set this option in Word and later open Excel, Excel should also use a dark theme.

Install Dark Themes for Chrome, Firefox, and Other Applications
Many other Windows desktop applications have their own theming options and engines. For example, to use a dark theme in Google Chrome, you’ll need to head to Google’s Chrome themes site and install a dark theme. Firefox includes a built-in dark theme you can enable.
For example, we installed the Morpheon Dark theme for Chrome. It makes Chrome look much more at home on a dark-themed desktop.
Some websites, including YouTube and Gmail, let you choose a dark theme for that website. For other websites, you’ll need to install a browser extension that turns the whole web dark.
You’ll have to check to see whether the applications you frequently use offer their own theme options.
Enable a Dark Theme for Windows Desktop Applications
The real problem with the new Dark Mode setting is that it doesn’t affect the Windows desktop theme at all. Desktop applications like File Explorer continue using the normal, light theme.
Windows has a built-in dark theme for desktop applications, but it probably isn’t ideal. To enable it, head to Settings > Ease of Access > High Contrast. On the right, enable the “Turn on High Contrast” option and set the “Choose a Theme” dropdown to the “High Contrast Black” setting. Click “Apply” to save the setting.
Setting this high contrast theme makes most desktop applications show a dark background. However, they don’t look all that great. High contrast themes are an accessibility feature designed to increase contrast, so the screen is easier to read and understand. They don’t look nearly as slick as a modern dark theme would.
RELATED:How to Install Custom Themes and Visual Styles in Windows
If you want a slicker dark theme for other desktop applications, you’ll have to resort to a third-party app. While there are a few out there, we’re big fans of WindowBlinds from Stardock (the same people that make apps like Fences and Start10). The app costs $9.99, but there’s a free 30-day trial, so you can see if it’s right for you.

And the nice part is, when you apply a theme in WindowBlinds, it applies to everything—UWP apps, desktop apps, dialog boxes, you name it.
After installing it, fire it up and head to the “Style” tab. To apply a theme, just select the one you want, and then click the “Apply Style To Desktop” button.
WindowBlinds doesn’t have a built-in dark theme (though some built-in themes are darker than others). You can always create your own by clicking the “Modify Style” link under any theme. You can adjust pretty much anything you can think of there. But, there’s an easier way.
Just head to the WindowBlinds section of the WinCustomize site. There, you’ll find all kinds of WindowBlinds-compatible skins you can download. After downloading one, double-click the file and the theme is added to the “Style” tab in WindowsBlinds so that you can apply it (or customize it) from there.
Here’s a shot of File Explorer with the Dark Mode skin (our favorite of the various dark themes on the site) applied through WindowBlinds:
Not bad, right? And with a little tweaking, you could make it look just the way you want.
Like many parts of Windows 10, Dark Mode feels a bit incomplete. Microsoft could include a dark theme option for Windows desktop applications, and the interface would look more cohesive. For now, though, this is what we’ve got. At least Microsoft has made the dark theme apply to File Explorer.
